In solidarity with artists in Greenland!

Dear artists and cultural workers of Greenland!

The Nordic Artists Council consists of the national artist councils of the Nordic countries,
including the Greenland Artist council, EPI. We wish to express that we stand with you
Greenlandic artists in deep shared solidarity during this time of political uncertainty and
external pressure regarding Greenland’s future.

Artistic and cultural expressions are fundamental to self-determination, democracy, and
human dignity. Greenlandic culture, languages, traditions, and contemporary artistic practices
are not commodities to be negotiated, nor symbols to be instrumentalised in geopolitical
ambitions. They are living expressions of a people with the right to define their own future.

We are deeply concerned by narratives and political statements suggesting that Greenland
could be taken over or treated as an object of strategic interest rather than as a society with its
own voice, rights, and cultural sovereignty. Such narratives risk undermining the safety,
freedom, and working conditions of artists and cultural practitioners, whose work often stands
at the forefront of social reflection, resistance, and dialogue.

The Nordic artistic community stands with Greenlandic artists in defending:
• Artistic freedom and freedom of expression
• Cultural self-determination and indigenous rights
• The right of artists to work without political intimidation or external coercion

We affirm that culture is not a bargaining chip. It is a foundation of identity, memory, and future-
making. Any discussion about Greenland’s future must fully respect the will of its people and
the integrity of its cultural life.

Please know that you are not alone. We remain committed to amplifying Greenlandic voices in
Nordic and international cultural forums and to resisting any attempts to silence, marginalise,
or instrumentalise your artistic work.

With respect, solidarity and unwavering support,

The Nordic Artists Council on behalf of artists and cultural workers across the Nordic countries:
